How to find a job that you’re passionate about

A pretty woman smiling as she's talking on her cell phone. Are you ready to learn how to find a wonderful career? Learn more in this article.

Finding purpose and passion in your work may seem like it’s only for a select few. Certainly, there is no perfect job, we’ll probably often encounter things we don’t like, but like many things in life it’s all about perspective. Yet when it comes to our work, this is something we should put a lot of thought and effort into. It is not an accident that you are reading this right now. Your life has major significance, and you were created for a purpose! So let’s learn how to find a job that you’re passionate about.

Search for satisfaction

Certainly there’s a few prized occupations that often seem to be admired by society’s standards, but your occupation should be what YOU desire, not anyone else. Through the years I’ve had the privilege of meeting many high-profile individuals who, if they could do it all again, would have chosen a different career that they were more passionate about. Yet, at the end of the day, having money is great, most of us will accomplish that much, but the real goal is satisfaction in what you do, you can’t put a price on that!

Stay motivated

So how about you? Do you feel that you have a decent amount of satisfaction in your work? If not, have you searched for something different? One thing is for sure, no matter your age, it’s never too late to try something new! So don’t sit back and do nothing. Don’t let some negative thoughts and feelings control your destiny. It’s time to do something great!

Discover your passion

If you’re not 100% sure what you’d like to do, then I would recommend looking at these resources and completing the questionnaires to help you discover what your passions are. These wonderful tools will provide insight and ask questions you haven’t thought about, plus they are free. For Red Bull’s Wing Finder, you will need to create a login but don’t let that extra step discourage you from taking this assessment, I think you’ll really find it helpful!

Moving forward

Once you’ve completed the assessments and explored all of the great resources, I am sure you now have a better idea of what interests you. Maybe you found something that clicked and you’re certain what path you’d like to take, if so, congratulations!

But if you’re not quite sure yet and haven’t found something you feel excited about that’s ok too, it’s part of the journey so don’t feel discouraged, just take things one step at a time. I recommend that you keep a small journal with you at all times to brainstorm some ideas until you find a solution, you have to be tenacious, this is YOUR future that’s on the line! If you’d rather use your phone to take notes, that’s a great option too, just be focused!

If you haven’t completed the assessment yet, here are a few questions you may want to answer:

• Do you like helping people?

• Do you prefer to work alone?

• Would you be ok working inside an office all day?

• Would you like to travel for work?

• Would you be ok sitting in front of a computer all day?

• Do you want a fast-paced job?

• Would you be ok if your job is somewhat dangerous?

More options

You can check the US Department of Labor website for a list of career choices to get some ideas. At this point if you begin to see something that catches your interest consider speaking with a recruiter and also inquire about shadowing someone for a whole day of work to see what it’s all about. Also, you may have the opportunity to become a volunteer as well.

Don’t place limits on what you can accomplish

Perhaps you discovered your ideal career choice requires new training or education; if so, please don’t be discouraged about this! If you need certification, vocational training, or many years of college/university education don’t lose hope. This is NOT the end of the road for you. Yes, it may take a lot of time, most things in life do take time and hard work but that’s normal. And yes, it may take a lot of money that you might not have, but don’t worry about that either. You can get financial aid in the form of a student loan, a scholarship, or a grant. There’s a whole world of funded education options available that most people don’t know about. You can speak with an academic advisor for more information. Additionally, you can perform your own research in the library, there you will find many resources to explore.

Don’t give up

Right now, I believe you’re one step closer than you were before in your search for a career you’re passionate about. Set some goals for yourself, make a to-do list, and create a timeline on your calendar. You can accomplish great things if you make a plan and stick to it!

I believe in you, and I believe you will accomplish great things!
