What goes through your mind when you think of the word “leadership“? Sincerely, pause for a moment and think about it… Now that you have that in your mind did you think of a president? A famous philanthropist or high-ranking military official? Or perhaps your old boss? Let’s bring this a little closer to home. How about your father? If your father was in your life, he held a leadership position; so was he a good leader? I realize this can be a very sensitive subject for many of us. I know that many people did not have a good relationship with their fathers and may even hate their fathers. And there are some of us who did not have a father growing up and we were left to figure things out on our own. I get it!
There are however those lucky few who had wonderful fathers, these men led by example, were wise, patient, and generous, not a perfect father but someone who really tried their best. Were you one of those lucky few? If not, that’s ok, it’s not too late to heal from the past and learn how to lead others effectively.
Now it’s our turn to leave a legacy
No matter what you’ve done in your life, good or bad, you can begin to be a wonderful leader for your family starting today! The perpetual pursuit of leadership is one of growth, seeking to learn new concepts, challenging your own personal bias, and being okay with a few mistakes along the way. And a quick word of encouragement to anyone who feels disappointed in themselves, “Failure is an event, not a person”. To clarify, YOU are not a failure! We all make mistakes, and we have the opportunity to learn from them and move on, we can’t relive our failures. We have enough challenges in this world, why be against yourself? From this point forward I want to encourage you to think of yourself as a leader. Whether you have a family to raise or you’re single: we all have to lead ourselves and remind ourselves of that fact every single day. We are leaders, it is an honor to lead, and I believe we all will lead well.
Now that we’ve had a little encouragement to push us ahead, lets pursue leadership together!
