When was the last time you were at the grocery store and saw a BOGO (by-one-get-one) for milk, cheese, and eggs, then thought to yourself “what am I going to do with all of this extra food? It’s going to go bad!” Or perhaps you’ve been in a situation where a potential power outage may occur, and you want to place everything in the freezer. Or maybe you just got home from the grocery store and received a phone call that a family member is in the hospital, so you know you’ll be out of town for a few weeks. Whatever the situation may be, take heart, your food will not go to waste. Now let’s get down to the details.

How to freeze milk

Make sure the milk is fresh. If it’s a brand-new carton be sure to drain at least six ounces to allow for expansion. When it’s time to take it out of the freezer don’t be surprised to find the color of it yellowish, that’s normal. You can allow it to thaw out quickly in the sink or place it back into the refrigerator for a slow thaw. Once it’s thawed the flavor and texture will be the same as it normally would, however there may be a slight variation depending on the fat content you selected.

*The milk label says do not freeze; I believe it states that because the carton they utilize isn’t officially designed for the freezer, but don’t worry, I’ve never had an issue when I follow the directions noted above.

How to freeze eggs

Make sure they are very fresh. You can leave them in the original container but when you’re ready for them to be thawed you must place them into a large container with a lid. You’ll find that due to the expansion the shell cracks, but no need to worry, they’ll thaw just fine and while they’re in the container it will secure the slight leakage. Be sure to leave them in the refrigerator to thaw. Now, the eggs will taste fine but you may be limited in how they’ll be prepared. The yoke remains firm, and the white portion will be a little more delicate. I’ve prepared mine as sunny side up and they were fine. If I wanted to make them scrambled, I’d most likely need to place them into the blender, although I haven’t tried that yet I’m sure it would be fine.

How to freeze cheese, butter, and everything else

Freezing cheese is simple, just make sure it’s very fresh and placed into a freezable bag/container. If it’s a hard cheese like parmesan it can last for many months and still taste great! It’s the same with butter too, just follow the same tips. You can also freeze yogurt. Just make sure it’s very fresh and leave it in the unopened container you purchased it in. You can also freeze lunchmeat too. Be sure all of the packages are very fresh and unopened. And if you love making sandwiches, you can freeze bread too! Almost all types of flour-based baked goods freeze perfectly fine and still taste the same in addition to almost every kind of dessert.

Tip: It is recommended to leave all items in the refrigerator to thaw safely and evenly. When you thaw the yogurt, make sure to stir it vigorously for a few minutes so the natural consistency returns.
