As of today, a man going to the barbershop for a haircut costs about $50 USD, depending on the city, and additional services requested such as beard treatment, shampoo, etc. If you like to keep your hair looking sharp, you’d most likely get your hair cut every two weeks on average. And perhaps you enjoy the barbershop atmosphere where you get to wind down and hang out with the guys to talk about sports or the latest styles. While I think it’s great to have a place like this, I think it’s also prudent to count the cost.
For example, let’s say you spend $100 dollars per month on haircuts, that adds up to $1,200 per year, multiply that for the next couple of years and add an additional 3-5% for inflation and now you can begin to visualize how much money is flying out the door just for a haircut!
Where is your money going?
It’s even more expensive for women, with special treatments, dye, perm or straighten, the cost can be upwards of $180+ per salon visit. And if a woman goes once a month that adds up to $2,160 per year! We’re talking about some serious cash just flying out of our bank accounts for haircuts!! I don’t want to overstate the obvious, but our hair keeps going back! It’s not a “one-and-done” like getting a new roof on the house. When you begin to look at the pattern and calculate the figures maybe you’re thinking you should open up your own barbershop or salon! You’re certainly not wrong to think that way, the numbers don’t lie.
Persistence pays off
So at this point I think you’re ready to hear what I have to say, after all, you want to save money right? Well let me share a story with you. Like many other people during Covid-19 I purchased a hair clipper set and a scissors and jumped right in. I knew I was smart enough to make it work so like any other new concept to master, I had to start at the beginning. My persistence paid off, literally! Over time my skills improved as did my bank account. A one-time investment has provided a huge return. And you can do it too!
Finding a solution
But perhaps you’re a woman reading this, I can sympathize with you depending on the type of hair you have but I can also say if you are dedicated enough and have a strong desire to reach a financial goal, I believe you’ll find a solution. I have a friend whose been cutting and dying her hair for years and she always, and I mean “always” receives compliments on her hair. And she also does her own nails too so she’s saving a ton of money, plus she’s also saving time not having to drive back and forth to the salon, plus the cost of fuel and wear and tear on her car and so on… It’s a total win-win.
Getting started
So Ladies, it is possible to have these wonderful results if you just put in the time. And if you don’t feel confident doing it by yourself then feel free to turn it into a girl’s night. It might just be the best event you planned all month! But remember, wine and scissors don’t mix, so save those chopping skills for a salad! I recommend spending some time doing research and watch a few YouTube videos until you feel that you understand the basic concepts. For your first time, you don’t have to do a full haircut, just try doing a minimal trim until you feel more comfortable.
And gentlemen, here’s what I did. I spent a lot of time watching different YouTube videos and learning different techniques. Once I found a hair cutting style I felt that I could duplicate, I just took my time layer-by-layer until I achieved the look I was going for; you just have to be patient.
Pro Tip for the men: I use a headband to make an impression around my head and use it as a guide. I also use a handheld mirror in addition to the mirror on the wall. With plenty of lighting and some good music you’ll soon become a master barber.
